Men’s tennis sweeps Millersville matches

Coming off of a successful tournament in Bloomsburg, the varsity men’s tennis team entered Tuesday’s dual match against Millersville prepared to dominate the courts again. Three doubles matches and six singles matches later, the team walked away undefeated.Upperclassmen Aaron Kusza and John Toppel helped lead Villanova in their impressive 7-0 record against Millersville. Junior Aaron Kusza posted a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the No. 1 singles position. Toppel, a senior, won his No. 2 singles match (6-1, 6-0). Later that afternoon the two forces paired up in No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 victory. “We played very well in singles and doubles and look forward to improving as we go deeper into the fall season,” Kusza said.Sophomores Carl Fenzl and Angel Rubio pulled off convincing wins in their singles matches. No. 6 singles player Fenzl defeated Fred Lombard (6-0, 6-0), while first year player Rubio won 6-1, 6-0 against Scott Smith at No. 5 singles. With partner and fellow Wildcat newcomer, Alex Villalobos, Rubio also won the No. 3 doubles match (8-2). Earlier in competition Villalobos, Villanova’s No. 3 singles player, came away with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.The team faces a series of tough matches next week. On Sunday afternoon, they travel to Fordham, followed by two home matches later in the week. “This is a positive beginning,” coach Bob Batman said, “but we should have agreater test this Sunday at Fordham.” Kusza agreed. “Our match against Millersville was a great opportunity for us to gain some confidence for our next match against Fordham,” he said.LaSalle visits Tuesday, while Delaware arrives Thursday to challenge a competitive Wildcat team.
