Video store hosts Reel Divine debut

Despite delays, the grand opening of Reel Divine, the new campus video store, went off without a hitch.

The grand opening featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, a DJ and free popcorn. Additionally, Reel Divine held raffles giving away two DVD players, one DVD/VHS player and 10 free rentals.

Located in the lower level of the Connelly Center, the store rents videos and DVDs to members. Membership is free and can be obtained by application.

Reel Divine was originally scheduled to open on the first day of school, but this was delayed because of legal issues with the video supplier. “We had the option to open earlier, but wanted to wait for full inventory,” Matt Thompson, the University staff member in charge of Reel Divine, said.

The video store currently rents 429 titles, averaging three copies per title.

Reel Divine rents new releases for 24 hours during the week for $3 and on the weekends for $4. Other movies rent for five days for $3. Action, comedy, drama, science fiction and classic titles are all available.

Because the store is run by the University, students do not have to pay tax on rentals.

In about a month, the store will begin to sell previously viewed movies, which will be guaranteed for 30 days after the date of the sale. Depending on the budget, Reel Divine may also begin to sell new movies at retail price.

The store will feature a games section by the beginning of next semester. The staff is also attempting to create a section for films being used in conjunction with classes, but how they are still waiting to hear from the faculty for approval of the idea. “As a school, we want the store to be for both education and entertainment,” Thompson said, “whereas stores like Blockbuster are primarily focused on entertainment.”

The Student Government Association has been working on the idea of a video store on campus for about three years.

“We got the vibe that this was something students wanted,” senior Maureen Holland, last year’s SGA president, said.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 12 midnight Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday.
