The women’s basketball program at Villanova is recognized nationally for being a consistent and talented squad each and every year. This year is no exception, and even though the national media seems more focused on the heralded men’s team, the women are still playing strong in the powerful Big East.

The Lady ‘Cats got back into action Saturday at the “world’s most famous arena,” Madison Square Garden. They faced a talented St John’s team that boasted a record of 15-3, including 5-2 in the Big East. In an up and down battle that was much closer than the final score showed, the Red Storm pulled out a 10 point victory after scoring the final six points of the game. ‘Nova had gone on a run to pull within four points with just under two minutes remaining, but from there St John’s took over and was able to hold on for the win.

Junior Jackie Adamshick led the way for the ‘Cats with 16 points and seven rebounds, and Betsy Mcmanus hit two 3-pointers on her way to 13 points.

Looking to get back on track the Lady ‘Cats hosted Marquette on Wednesday. They greeted them with an impressive 72-58 victory in the Eagles’ first visit to the Pavilion as a member of the Big East. Jenna Viani lit it up from outside, going four for six from 3-point range on her way to 17 points. Betsy Mcmanus added 15 more points as well as dishing out seven assists.

Center Kate Dessart Mager posted a double double, with 13 points to go with 13 rebounds. Jackie Adamshick and Courtney Roantree also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Eagles hung in the game with a great effort by Christina Quaye who finished with 19, and Jasmine Mccullough who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. In the end the defensive tenacity and hot shooting of the ‘Cats was too much for Marquette to handle.

This win brings the cats to 12-7 as they head into another tough Big East battle with Pittsburgh on Saturday at the Pavilion. With more consistent performances like the Marquette game, this team will once again be headed for the postseason and beyond.
