Students step out in the latest trends in footwear

The warm weather is almost here. Are you ready to step into spring in style? The bright shades of spring are becoming evident outside, so your shoe wardrobe should also start making the transformation.

Vibrant colors, metallic leather and girly details are making a splash into spring, along with chunky heels, platform wedges and open-toed flats.

According to InStyle magazine, X marks the spot on most of the spring’s hottest pumps. The thick criss-cross straps draws attention to the ankle and emphasizes the shape of the foot, while also providing adequate support in these high heels.

The thick criss-crosses provide an element of elegance to balance the harsh, thick heel. These strappy pumps work best with cropped pants and jeans.

Another big trend for Spring ’06 is the return of the platform sandal. These sandals, with their corked bottoms and colorful fabrics, should be paired with a flowy knee-length skirt or straight-cut jeans to soften the appearance of these comeback shoes.

Does the thought of these high-heeled styles make your feet hurt?

“There is no way I can walk around in heals all day long, I need a cute pair of comfortable flats,” sophomore Laura Conciatori said.

Comfy open-toe flats and Roman-inspired sandals can also make a statement this spring. Flats with peek-a-boo toes in varying colors and fabrics are this season’s version of the traditional ballet flat.

Last summer’s simple thong sandals are also updated for 2006 with more details. Thicker straps, metallic colors, and even ornate bows and brooches dress up this wardrobe staple. Flats and thongs can be dressed up or down and are best paired with floral skirts and, of course, jeans.

Other styles you’ll see this spring include espadrilles, ankle wraps and nautical looks. Espadrilles come in every color, heel height and price range to fit your personal style and budget. Ankle wrap shoes draw attention to the ankle and provide a sexy strappy element to all shoe styles.

Any of the latest spring styles are bound to have a nautical touch including rope detail, contrasting color schemes and a casual feel. As the winter weather rolls out and the days become brighter, stay hot this season with the latest shoe trends.
