Women’s Tennis: Wildcats go 1-3 over spring break

The women’s tennis team traveled to Fort Myers, Fla. for its spring break, where it took on Fairfield, Florida Gulf Coast and the University of South Florida, recording one victory and two losses.

The Wildcats (5-6) narrowly defeated Fairfield 4-3, with singles wins from sophomores Carla Erskine and Courtney Reed and senior Ashley Reed. Erskine and Ashley Reed easily overtook their opponents, winning their matches in straight sets. Courtney lost the first set 4-6, but rebounded well to win the final two sets 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.

The doubles teams won two out of their three matches as well. The No. 2 doubles team composed of junior Daniella Phillis and Courtney Reed took their match by a 8-3 score, while the No. 3 pairing of Erskine and freshman Natasha Stone defeated their opposition by a 8-4 margin.

Florida Gulf Coast and South Florida proved to be more difficult opponents, however. Villanova received 0-7 losses in both matches.

After returning from the sunny Florida weather, the Wildcats took on Quinnipiac on March 9 in Hamden, Conn. Villanova faced yet another tough squad and a suffered a 0-7 loss.

The Wildcats will face Temple on March 18 before returning home for the first time this spring season. Villanova is slated to take on Bucknell Wednesday at 1 p.m. and Seton Hall Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Villanova Tennis Complex. — A.G.
