Gryphon distinctive, quaint Main Line café

Erica Graham

“The best coffee house on the Main Line.” This is often the answer one hears when asking patrons and workers alike to describe the Gryphon, a quaint neighborhood café located in downtown Wayne.

With its warm and comfortable atmosphere, the Gryphon Café is the perfect place to study, meet with friends or simply relax with a cup of coffee while soaking in the surroundings. The rustic furniture and art-adorned walls make you feel as if you have just walked into someone’s cozy kitchen or family room.

The friendly people at the Gryphon make you feel right at home as they serve you tea in individual novel teapots and coffee in ceramic mugs.

The drink menu offers an array of high-quality free-trade coffee, specialty teas, smoothies and more. The salads, soups and sandwiches at the Gryphon are mostly vegetarian, including dishes such as the tomato carrot bisque soup, grilled portobello sandwich and seasonal fresh fruit salad.

Not only is the Gryphon a great place for healthy food and great coffee, but it is also a prominent cultural and artistic center in the community. Every Monday night at 8 p.m., the Gryphon offers an open mic for local amateur musicians willing to display their talent. There is also live music every Friday and Saturday night beginning at 9 p.m..

In addition to live music, the Gryphon holds an art reception on the first Friday of every month, giving local artists a chance to display their artwork on the walls of the café. This creative and aesthetic setting is perfect for the poetry readings on the last Wednesday of every month.

Rich Mattis, the owner of the Gryphon, says he is working hard to provide the people of the Main Line with an alternative and original establishment that not only delivers quality products but promotes the musical and artistic talent in the neighborhood. Unlike Starbucks or other cookie-cutter chain coffee shops, the Gryphon is unique and dedicated to making the costumers feel comfortable and content, providing free Wi-Fi, friendly service and, if you are lucky, a little “latte foam art” to make your cup extra special.

There is no such thing as a one-time consumer at the Gryphon – after one step through the door, you will find that this enchanting little café will soon be your most frequented jump-off spot.
