‘Cats lacrosse net win over Mountain Hawks

It was a successful day for the men’s lacrosse team as it beat the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 16-6 at the Villanova Stadium last Saturday.

Junior Paul Webber was on the top of his game, scoring three goals and bringing his season total to nine goals. He also added to his already three assists during the game, bringing his season total to 10.

The ‘Cats wasted no time in the game. Villanova was up 2-0 with 10:53 on the clock after goals by junior Mark Scioscia and senior Dan Liva. Lehigh tried to fight back against the dominating Wildcats by netting a goal at the 10:07 mark, but ‘Nova did not let the Hawks celebrate too much, responding with four more goals by Webber, senior Tim Langan and freshmen CJ Small and Kevin Cunningham.

The second quarter ended with the ‘Cats still in the lead 7-4. Scioscia added the seventh goal to Villanova’s total and the Hawks responded with three goals of their own to lessen the Wildcats’ lead.

Villanova was able to run away with the game in the third quarter erupting with nine consecutive goals. Webber, Small, Langan and Liva added to their previous scored goals. Freshman Matt Bell, sophomore Mike Brennan and senior Tim Driscoll got in on the scoring action as well.

Senior goalkeeper Andrew DiLoreto stayed strong in goal throughout four quarters, totaling nine saves for the game, adding to his 48 saves for the season so far.

In the past six games, DiLoreto has held opponents to a mere 34 goals. Mountain Hawk goal keeper Conor Murphy earned nine saves, but also allowed nine goals.

The victory for Villanova brings their record to 5-1 this season. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents by 28 goals in those six games.

The ‘Cats take the field March 21 to start conference play against the Delaware Blue Hens. The teams square up at 7 p.m. in the Villanova Stadium.
