After departing the program earlier this season, junior Zion Stanford now plans to enter the transfer portal for his final year of eligibility, per Ken Jackson of Sky Limit Sports. However, if he tries for a medical redshirt, it could become two years.
The transfer from Temple averaged 1.3 points and 5.1 minutes per game this season. During his sophomore year at Temple, he averaged 13.1 points and 4.5 rebounds, as well as shooting 34.9% from three-point range.
The six-foot-six guard is a Philadelphia native and played at West Catholic in high school.
It became clear Stanford left the program when he did not travel to Chicago for Villanova’s game against DePaul on March 4. He was then listed out during Villanova’s next game against Xavier, nor was he on the bench.
Jeff Neiburg of The Inquirer then reported was no longer with the team.
He had missed the beginning of Villanova’s season with an ankle injury. Stanford made his first appearance on Nov. 15 against Duquesne, but had limited minutes for the remaining games he played in.
Stanford is the first Wildcat to make any indication of transferring. Villanova is currently left with nine eligible players, leaving Kevin Willard with six spots to fill, given nobody else enters the portal.
The NCAA men’s basketball portal will open on Tuesday, April 7 and close on April 21, giving players a 15-day window to enter.
