Villanova men’s tennis dropped a pair of road matches over the weekend, falling 5–2 to Bucknell on March 29 before closing the trip with a loss to Saint Joseph’s.
Villanova opened the stretch against Bucknell, where the Bison claimed the doubles point with wins on Courts No. 1 and No. 2. Senior Cooper Gordon and junior Ethan Carr fell 7–5 at the top position, while juniors Kush Anand and Thomas Wakefield dropped a 6–3 decision at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Quincy Jones and Jack Sherner earned Villanova’s lone doubles win with a dominant 6–1 victory at the No. 3 spot.
Bucknell carried momentum into singles play, winning four of six matches to secure the 5–2 team victory.
At No. 1 singles, Gordon was edged in a tightly contested match, falling 6–7, 2–6. Junior Will Monahan dropped a three-set battle at No. 2, falling 6–2, 3–6, 4–6. Carr also pushed to three sets at the No. 3 position before falling 6–0, 4–6, 2–6.
Villanova picked up two singles victories, highlighted by Wakefield’s comeback win at No. 5. After dropping the opening set, Wakefield rallied to earn a 4–6, 6–2, 6–2 victory. Jones added another point with a strong 6–4, 6–2 win at No. 6 singles.
The Wildcats continued play the following day against Saint Joseph’s, where they once again fell behind after doubles play.
Saint Joseph’s secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, defeating Gordon and Carr 6–3 and Anand and Wakefield by the same score. Jones and Sherner picked up Villanova’s lone doubles victory for the second straight match, earning a 6–3 win at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, Villanova competed closely but was unable to secure enough points to overcome the early deficit.
Gordon battled to three sets at the top spot before falling 6–3, 5–7, 6–2. Monahan dropped a 6–3, 6–2 decision at No. 2 singles. Wakefield also fell in straight sets at No. 4.
Two matches went unfinished, with Carr and Anand both in the middle of competitive three-set contests. Jones provided Villanova’s lone completed singles win, earning a 6–3, 6–2 victory at No. 6.
Villanova moves to 5-11 on the season and will head to Rider (5-6) on Wednesday, April 1 with the first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
