Villanova women’s basketball is headed to the Big East Championship game after a 62-48 win on Sunday night over 3-seeded Seton Hall. The Wildcats (25-6, 16-4 Big East) entered the semi-final round of the conference tournament after a 73-65 victory over Providence on Saturday.
Villanova had already defeated the Pirates (19-12, 12-8 Big East) twice this season by 15 points or more. Just two weeks ago, the ‘Cats had a 30-point victory over Seton Hall on its home court in South Orange, NJ.
Fast forward to this weekend, and Villanova ended Seton Hall’s season, eight days into March. The Pirates held sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe to only 15 points, her first game below 18 in over two months. Junior forward Brynn McCurry was the highest scorer with 16 points and made four steals.
Senior guard Denae Carter scored 11 points and was crowned the rebounding queen at seven. Senior guard Ryanne Allen was held to a single three-pointer in her 18 minutes of play.
Rookie guard Kennedy Henry led the team to five assists. Freshman forward Brooke Bender had five points and junior guard Kelsey Joens contributed six.
The top scorers for the Pirates were freshman guard Zahara Bishop and senior guard Jordana Codio, who both had 13 points. Bishop grabbed seven rebounds while Codio took four.
The ‘Cats went 24-of-61 (39%) from the field and shot 5-of-28 (17.9%) from beyond the arc compared to Seton Hall’s 18.8%. Villanova managed to go 9-of-9 from the foul line and made a total of 15 points off fast breaks.
Villanova will take on No. 1 University of Connecticut in the Big East Championship game tomorrow, March 9th. The undefeated Huskies are now on a 33-game win streak. In UConn’s previous matchup against the ‘Cats, Villanova fell 83-69 back on Feb. 18 at the Finneran Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m and can be streamed on NBCSN and Peacock.
