On Saturday, Feb. 14, Villanova women’s lacrosse (2-1) traveled to Annapolis, ME to face No. 10 Navy (3-0). It was defeated, 18-5 by the Midshipmen, moving Villanova to a record of 1-1.
Redshirt junior Elena Torres opened up the game with a goal at the 13:58 mark. Junior Sophia Corretjer had the assist.
Navy answered quickly with four goals in a row. The Wildcats were able to close the gap, making the score 4-3 with goals from sophomore Leslie Iorio and junior Jillian Vaught. Navy added one more before the end of the first period to make it 5-3.
Things began to fall apart in the second quarter, as the Midshipmen put up eight unanswered goals to extend their lead to 13-3.
Navy’s sophomore attacker Alyssa Chung accounted for seven of its goals.
The Wildcats were able to put in two more goals in the second half of the game. One came from a free-position attempt from redshirt sophomore Mary Moore. The second was from redshirt junior Bella Piselli, assisted by senior Ashlyn Hickey.
The final score was 18-5.
Junior goalie Makenzie Fisher achieved a new career high in saves with 13.
The Wildcats returned to Villanova Stadium on Tuesday Feb. 17 against Big 5 Rival St.Joseph’s (1-2), getting the win with a final of 13-7.
Torres had a season-best six points, tallying four goals and two assists. Piselli achieved her second hat trick of the season with two goals and one free position.
Junior Emma Verhoust won 14 draw controls over the Hawks.
The Wildcats went on a 3-0 run in the opening quarter with goals from Corretjer, Moore and Torres. They ended the quarter up 6-2.
St.Joseph’s came out hot in the second quarter, netting three goals in a row to make the score 6-5.
Iorio started the momentum again for the ‘Cats after scoring on a man-up goal. Villanova added two more goals to end the half up, 9-6.
The Wildcats kept their lead through the rest of the competition, only allowing St.Joseph’s to get within two. Junior defender Anne Edens scored her first career goal in the fourth, to extend Villanova’s lead to 13-7.
The Hawks scored two more goals within the last remaining minutes, but were unable to catch up. Villanova was able to get the win, with a final score of 13-9.
Villanova will return on Saturday, Feb. 21 to host Rutgers. The first draw is set for 12 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
