Villanova men’s tennis fell, 6–1, to Navy on Saturday and 6–1 to George Mason on Sunday. The Wildcats are 2–4 overall this season.
Villanova opened the weekend in Annapolis, MD against Navy. The Midshipmen took an early lead by claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Villanova earned its lone doubles win at No. 3, where sophomores Quincy Jones and Jack Sherner secured a 6–4 victory.
“We played well and our preparation was good,” coach Brad Adams said. “But we came up short in doubles. We need to work on our recovery after losing the first set. It’s more of a mentality thing than physical. Our goal should be “that it’s only one point” and that we have more competition ahead, it’s not a “death blow”.”
In singles play, Navy captured five of the six matches to seal the team victory.
“In singles we’re doing excellent with rallies that are deeper in the court,” Adams said. “We need to extend opponents with a midrange shot that gets them outside of the singles sidelines.”
Thomas Wakefield provided the Wildcats’ only point of the afternoon with a strong 6–0, 6–3 win on court No. 5. Sophomore Cameron Kruep pushed his match to a second-set tiebreak before falling 6–3, 7–6 (7–4), while Jones, senior Cooper Gordon, junior Will Monahan and junior Ethan Carr were each defeated in straight sets.
Villanova then played against George Mason but lost, 6-1.
“I’m pleased with how we’re striking the ball,” Adams said. “But we’re putting ourselves in tough situations and giving away free points.”
George Mason won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to take an early lead.
The Patriots went on to claim five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.
Carr registered the Wildcats’ only point, earning a 7–6, 6–4 win at the No. 4 position. Gordon battled in a competitive three-set match at No. 1 singles before falling 4–6, 6–3, 11–9. Jones and Wakefield were defeated in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3, while junior Kush Anand and Kruep dropped close matches at courts No. 5 and No. 6.
“For Colgate, priority number one is playing better in doubles,” Adams said. “We need all 3 to come out to a fast start, get first break and capitalize.”
The Wildcats will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they will play Colgate. First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
