Villanova defeated Creighton, 74-64, on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, NE. The Wildcats (21-5 overall, 14-3 Big East) extended their winning streak to six games and a total of nine wins on the road.
With no surprise, the highest scorer of the game was sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe with 21 points and seven rebounds. Bascoe also led the team with five assists. Rookie guard Kennedy Henry scored 17 points, grabbing four rebounds and four steals.
Senior Denae Carter scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the ‘Cats. Junior forward Brynn McCurry led Villanova in rebounds with nine. She was held by the Bluejays (12-14, 8-9), to 11 points. Both Carter and McCurry fouled out of the game during the last quarter.
Despite winning by 10 points, the ‘Cats went 3-15 from behind the arc, but made-up points at the free throw line, shooting nearly 94%. Eight of Bascoe’s 21 points were free throws. The game had five lead changes along with five ties. Villanova was down, 32-29 at the half, but grabbed the lead again three minutes into the third quarter.
To start the fourth quarter, both teams led with forceful defense leading to a 4.5 minute scoring drought on both sides of the court. The ‘Cat’s largest lead of the night was by 15 points, coming after two Bascoe’s free throws with two minutes left.
Villanova was held to only nine points off the bench. Their season high of points off the bench is currently 32, achieved against Providence last month. Senior guard Ryanne Allen had four points and two blocks. Freshman forward Brook Bender scored three points and sophomore guard Dani Ceseretti had two.
Women’s basketball is currently predicted as the No.9 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to bracketology. They have three games remaining in the regular season.
Villanova will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The ‘Cats will take on undefeated No. 1 UConn (27-0, 16-0) at the Finneran Pavilion at 7 p.m. (Peacock). The last time the two teams faced off, UConn defeated Villanova in Storrs, 99-50.
