On Monday Feb. 10, Villanova women’s lacrosse defeated Towson University, 15-6, in its season opener.
In the win, eight players scored multiple points.
Redshirt junior Bella Piselli and freshmen Kathryn Monaco both had hat tricks. Madison Freeman, Leslie Iorio and Elena Torres all added two goals for Villanova.
Junior midfielder Rose Christie netted the first goal of the season for the Wildcats (1-0). She had a career-best four assists while junior Emma Verhoust totaled nine draw controls. Verhoust is the current all-time leader in draw controls per game and second for career draw controls.
Freshman midfielder Kate O’Neil tallied six caused turnovers, tying the program single-game record in her collegiate debut. She also had six ground balls.
Redshirt sophomore Cailin Harrington also added four caused turnovers.
Villanova went up 6-1 in the first half of the game, with goals from Cristie, Freeman and junior Jillian Vaught.
Its momentum carried through the second half, as the Wildcats scored nine more to seal the 15-6 win.
This was the Wildcat’s second time in program history facing Towson (1-1) and their first win over the Tigers.
Villanova will travel to Annapolis on Saturday to take on No. 10 United States Naval Academy (1-0). The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. from Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. Last season, Villanova fell to Navy at home, 16-17. The ‘Cats will be looking to get revenge after a strong showing in their first game of the season.
