On Wednesday, Feb. 4, Villanova women’s basketball defeated Butler University, 67-57, on the road in Indianapolis, IN.
It is the second time this season that the Wildcats (18-5, 11-3 Big East) have defeated the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-10 Big East) by seven points or more.
Sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe rallied the Wildcat offense, scoring 27 points. Wednesday night’s performance marks back-to-back games in which Boscoe has tallied 27 points.
At Hinkle Fieldhouse, Bascoe went 3-for-9 from behind the arc and 10-for-26 on total field goals.
Freshman guard Kennnedy Henry and junior forward Brynn McCurry both put up 12 points apiece. Henry led the team against the glass with 5 rebounds, while McCurry posted two steals.
The ‘Cats got off to a slow start in the first half, finishing with a three-point deficit at the end of the first quarter and managing to score just eight points in the second quarter. At halftime, Villanova trailed by four points, 28-24.
During the third quarter, Bascoe accounted for 17 of the team’s 24 points in 10 minutes.
Senior forward Denae Carter put up six points and grabbed five rebounds.
Off the bench, sophomore guard Dani Ceseratti scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds along the way.
McCurry faced foul trouble after committing three personal fouls, two of which happened in the second quarter, seven minutes apart. With 2:29 left in the first half, McCurry was subbed off and returned for the start of the second half. Despite receiving her third foul with 7:27 left in the game, McCurry remained on the court for another three minutes.
Villanova went 87.5% from the free-throw line but fell 6-for-20 in three-point shooting. Last week, the ‘Cats averaged 42% from behind the arc in their matchup against DePaul.
Butler’s highest scorer was sophomore guard McKenna Johnson with 16 points. However, Johnson was responsible for three personal fouls and four turnovers.
The Villanova Wildcats will return home to the Finneran Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 7, to take on Georgetown University (12-10, 5-8) at 2 p.m. (ESPN+). The Pavilion will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as the ‘Cats look to extend their 27-10 all-time series against the Hoyas.
