Balancing coursework, extracurriculars and a social life is a familiar challenge for college students. But adding an internship to that mix introduces an entirely new level of responsibility. As a communication major at Villanova University, holding an internship while being a full-time student has been one of the most impactful parts of my academic experience. It has allowed me to move beyond theory and into practice and apply what I learn in the classroom to real-world situations while gaining clarity about the communication industry as a whole.
Villanova’s Communication Department emphasizes critical thinking, ethical storytelling and strategic messaging across platforms. In classes focused on public relations, media writing, advertising and rhetoric, students analyze case studies, craft campaigns and study how messages shape public perception. While these academic foundations are essential, seeing how they translate into a professional setting has made the lessons feel more tangible and urgent. Concepts that once lived only in textbooks suddenly carry real consequences when applied to clients, deadlines and stakeholders.
Through my internship experience, I have been practicing skills developed in class. Writing press materials, drafting social media content, assisting with campaign planning and observing client communications have reinforced the importance of clarity, adaptability and professionalism. The work environment has also highlighted that the communication field is collaborative. Success rarely comes from individual effort alone. Instead, it depends on teamwork, feedback and an openness to learning from others with different perspectives and levels of experience.
One of the most valuable aspects of interning while in school is the opportunity to grow in real time. When I encounter challenges at work, whether it’s navigating constructive criticism or managing multiple deadlines, I can reflect on those experiences in class discussions and assignments. Similarly, when professors introduce new frameworks or strategies, I can immediately consider how they apply to my internship. This ongoing exchange between academic learning and professional practice has deepened my understanding of both. This experience is shared by many Villanova students pursuing careers in communications.
Christina Galdi, a junior, who is also balancing coursework with a public relations internship, emphasizes how transformative this opportunity can be.
“Participating in a PR internship while studying communication, PR and Advertising has given me the opportunity to apply my classroom knowledge to projects and tasks within a workplace setting,” Galdi said. “That said, this experience has been invaluable thus far, and I am extremely grateful to Villanova for supporting me with this professional endeavor.”
Galdi’s experience reflects a broader culture at Villanova that encourages students to seek hands-on learning and professional growth alongside academic rigor. Internships also offer exposure to the realities of the communication industry that cannot be fully captured in a classroom. The fast-paced nature of the field, the need to respond quickly to changing circumstances and the importance of maintaining strong professional relationships all become clear through firsthand experience. While the work can be demanding, it is also deeply rewarding to contribute meaningfully to projects and see how strategic communication can influence real outcomes.
Villanova plays a crucial role in making these opportunities accessible. Through faculty mentorship, career services and an emphasis on experiential learning, the University supports students as they navigate professional spaces for the first time. Professors often encourage students to pursue internships early and use them as a tool for exploration rather than expecting immediate certainty about career paths. This mindset helps reduce pressure and fosters curiosity.
Ultimately, having an internship while studying at Villanova has helped me grow not only as a communication major but also as a professional and individual. It has clarified my interests, strengthened my skills and reinforced the value of adaptability and lifelong learning. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, internships transform education into experience, preparing students to enter the communications industry with confidence, purpose and a deeper understanding of the world they will join.
