On Saturday, Jan. 31 Villanova women’s basketball (17-5, 10-3 Big East) defeated DePaul (5-19, 2-11 Big East), 69-54, at the Finneran Pavilion. The ‘Cats extend their home winning streak to 10, and their Big East conference record jumps to double digits at 10-3. DePaul extends its away losing streak to 11 games, going 2-11 in the conference.
“I’m pleased with us making adjustments to the physicality,” said head coach Denise Dillon. “And coming out with the win.”
Sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe led the way for the ‘Cats with 27 points. The Canadian achieved five assists for her teammates and grabbed two rebounds as well. Senior guard Ryanne Allen managed 17 points out of 29 of the total bench points and grabbed seven rebounds.
“Our bench has been tremendous,” said Dillon. “I think any of them are capable of being in our starting lineup.”
Villanova was able to force 18 turnovers against the Blue Demons, who committed seven in a span of eight minutes. The highest scorer for DePaul was sophomore guard Devin Hagemann, who totaled 14 points.
At the half, the ‘Cats were up, 33-20 after a 9-0 run to end the first 20 minutes of play. Villanova was able to shoot 9-for-12 (75%) from the free throw line and 6-for-14 (42.9%) from behind the arc to end the game.
DePaul fell into foul trouble, totaling 19 team fouls across the forty minutes. Alayna West led the Blue Demons with five personal fouls and had to exit the game with 3:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats currently sit at second place in the Big East, behind No.1 ranked University of Connecticut.
Villanova is scheduled to take on Butler University (9-12, 3-8 Big East) on Wednesday, Feb 4. The ‘Cats will travel to Indianapolis, IN to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. (ESPN +).
