The Villanova women’s tennis team (1-3) went on the road this past Friday, Jan. 23, for matches against Sacred Heart University (0-1) and Army (3-2) in West Point, New York. The Wildcats picked up their first win of the season, with a 4-0 result against Sacred Heart, but fell to Army, 4-0, later that day.
Villanova took the lead by taking the doubles point at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions with a 6-3 win from sophomore Olivia Corcoran and junior Jenna Stevens and a 6-3 win from juniors Miriam Gondorova and Lauren Monti on the third court.
The team then moved on to singles, where Gondorova fought for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3. Monti, at No. 4, had a 6-3, 6-2 win to further the lead. The match was ultimately decided by junior Maddie Hills’ 6-2, 6-3 victory.
Later that evening, the Wildcats were defeated by Army. Army took the doubles point as seniors Maggie Gehrig and Emi Callahan fell 6-2 to Army’s pairing, and Stevens and Corcoran also lost their match.
The Black Knights then claimed wins on the third, fourth, and sixth courts in the singles portion, defeating Stevens at the No. 3 spot, Monti at No. 4, and Hills at No. 6.
On Jan. 30, the Wildcats will travel to Newark to face Delaware. Match start is set for 1 p.m.
