On Sunday, Nov. 16, Villanova women’s basketball traveled to James Madison University, defeating the Dukes, 82-73.
The contest was Villanova’s first road game. Three of the team’s four games this season have been played at home, and one was at a neutral site in Toronto, Canada.
This was the sixth meeting between Villanova (3-2) and JMU (3-2). The Wildcats currently lead the all-time series, 4-2, and are undefeated on the road. Last season, Villanova fell to JMU at home, 71-67, on Dec. 15.
The Wildcats shot 28-57 (49%) from the field and 12-29 (41%) from beyond the arc on Sunday. JMU won the rebound battle, 29-26.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures. Junior guard Brynn McCurry led the way and totaled a career-high 18 points. She also led the team with five rebounds and seven assists. McCurry made her return to the court this season redshirting the 2024-25 campaign due to an ACL injury. McCurry is currently averaging 7.2 points and 4.2 assists per contest.
Sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe tacked on 17 points, four assists and five turnovers. Bascoe leads the team in scoring, averaging 18 points per game.
Senior guard Ryanne Allen totaled 14 points off the bench, while freshman guard Kennedy Henry and junior guard Kelsey Joens scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The contest remained close throughout the first half. McCurry led the charge early, as she grabbed a steal and layup to begin the game for the Wildcats. Bascoe and Henry contributed two three-point buckets as well. Villanova ended the first quarter with a 21-20 edge.
Joens exploded offensively in the second quarter, scoring 10 consecutive points within a span of just over two minutes. Villanova led by double-digits before the Dukes went on an 8-0 run, cutting the lead to two.
The Wildcats headed into halftime with a 37-35 lead.
Villanova took over in the third quarter, which was paced by Allen, who added nine points from beyond the arc. Bascoe and Henry netted two three-pointers as well. The Wildcats extended their lead and finished the quarter ahead, 61-51
Villanova continued their momentum into the fourth quarter and led by as much as 15 points.
The Dukes were paced by Peyton McDaniel, who collected a 23-point, 14-rebound double-double.
The Wildcats will host Temple University (3-1) on Saturday, Nov. 22, for their first Big 5 game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (ESPN+).
