On Sunday, Feb. 16, Villanova women’s basketball traveled to Cincinnati, OH to face Xavier, sealing the season sweep with a 57-42 win.
Villanova (15-11, 9-5 Big East) previously beat Xavier (6-20, 1-14 Big East) at home, 67-52, on Jan. 25. The Musketeers currently stand last in the conference. Villanova is tied with Marquette for fourth.
Graduate forward Lara Edmanson and freshman guard Jasmine Bascoe led the way for the Wildcats, grabbing 15 points each.
Edmanson scored her 1,000th point to mark the victory against the Musketeers. The transfer from Santa Clara totaled a season-high of 15 points on the day, putting her past the 1,000 point threshold with 1,007.
Sophomore guard Maddie Webber followed close behind with 13, shooting 5-for-10 from the field and netting one three-pointer. Bascoe also led with five assists, and junior forward Denae Carter grabbed a team-high nine rebounds
The ‘Cats started out slow in the first quarter, as it took them nearly two minutes to find the first bucket. Webber eventually ended the early scoring drought with a layup. Villanova finished the first quarter ahead just 8-7.
Villanova then went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the second quarter to go up, 16-13. Xavier answered with a fastbreak layup, followed by a Carter bucket. Come halftime, the Wildcats led by just three.
Villanova began to pick it up through the third and fourth quarter, as Bascoe and Edmanson combined for 15 of the team’s 18 points in the third. The ‘Cats finished the third quarter up 38-31.
Villanova then went on a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, and maintained its lead through the final buzzer. The Wildcats shot 41.7% from field goal range and went 25.0% from beyond the arc.
Villanova will next host Georgetown (11-14, 4-10) on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The Hoyas are tied with St. John’s for sixth in the conference. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m and the game will be broadcast on FloSports.
