The Wells Fargo Center will have a new name at the start of the next Villanova basketball season.
On Tuesday, May 6, the arena’s ownership group, Comcast-Spector and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), announced in a press release that the Wells Fargo Center will be renamed the “Xfinity Mobile Arena.”
The new Xfinity Mobile partnership is set to begin Sept. 1, 2025, with the new signage being revealed on Sept. 2, 2025.
“This arena is an anchor in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex and broader region,” Dan Hilferty, Chairman & CEO of Comcast Spectacor, said in the release. “As we complete our historic relationship with Wells Fargo, we wanted to ensure that our new partner matched our enthusiasm for delivering world-class service to our fans and guests. We are committed to continuing investing in our venue to ensure we’re at the forefront of technology, innovation, and cutting-edge fan experiences. We couldn’t be more excited that Xfinity Mobile’s brand will become the centerpiece for sports and entertainment in Philadelphia.”
The arena is home to the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers.
Villanova basketball plays a select number of home games in the arena each season, as well as the Big 5 Classic, a one-day round robin tournament made up of six Philadelphia basketball schools.
Xfinity Mobile’s naming rights contract for the arena will last through the 2030-31 season – the final season of the arena’s tenure.
Earlier this year, Comcast-Spector and HBSE announced plans to build a new sports venue that is set to open at the start of the 2031-32 season.
“Xfinity Mobile is one of the fastest-growing wireless services in the country and the only provider in its markets to deliver gig speeds to customers seamlessly inside and outside of the home,” the press release stated. “Comcast first launched Xfinity Mobile to consumers across the nation from its hometown of Philadelphia in 2017 and will be bringing the brand’s unmatched experience to one of the most storied venues in the country.”
The name change follows Wells Fargo’s announcement in July 2024 that it decided not to renew its naming rights contract, which is set to expire in August 2025.
“Wells Fargo regularly reviews and adjusts our overall sponsorship strategy. As such, we have made the business decision not to renew the naming rights contract to Wells Fargo Center,” a spokesperson said in a July 2024 statement.
Along with the arena’s new name, the ownership group also announced that Xfinity Mobile will bring new “cutting-edge WiFi capabilities” to the arena at no extra cost to fans.
The arena opened in 1996 and has gone through five name changes. Before the Wells Fargo Center name, it was previously known as the CoreStates Center, the First Union Center and the Wachovia Center.
Coming this fall: Home of the Flyers and 76ers to have new name: Xfinity Mobile Arena.
