DETAILS: The Sonny Hill League was founded by Sonny Hill in 1968. The League began as an extension of the Charles Baker Memorial league (founded in 1960), the nation’s oldest professional summer basketball league. During our inaugural season, the league consisted of only five basketball teams. Today, the league consists of more than 60 teams serving more than 800 student-athletes. Alumni of the Sonny Hill League have achieved success in various fields including athletics, medicine, law and religion. League alumni include Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers), Eddie Jones (Miami Heat), Aaron McKie (Philadelphia 76ers), Cutino Mobley (Houston Rockets), Rasheed Wallace (Portland Trailblazers), Alvin Williams (Toronto Raptors), Marc Jackson, (Minnesota Timberwolves), Rick Brunson (Portland Trailblazers), Malik Rose (San Antonio Spurs), Matt Maloney, Emmanuel Davis, Doug Overton, Lionel Simmons, Bruiser Flint (Head Coach – Drexel University), Phil Martelli (Head Coach – St. Joseph’s University), Monte Ross (Assistant Coach – St. Joseph’s University), Jay Wright, (Head Coach – Villanova University) and Nate Blackwell (Assistant Coach – Temple University), Danny Leibowitz (Assistant Coach – Temple University), Roland Houston (Assistant Coach – LaSalle University).
