Democratic Policy Committee to hold hearing Thursday at Lehigh University about sexual violence on college campuses

HARRISBURG, Oct. 26 – Policy Committee Chairman Stephen H. Stetler, D-York, announced today that the House Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public hearing about the presence of sexual violence on college campuses from 9:45 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28 at Lehigh University, Room 303 of the University Center Building, 29 University Drive, Bethlehem.

The hearing will be co-hosted by Reps. Steve Samuelson, D-Northampton/Lehigh, and Keith McCall, D-Carbon. McCall has introduced a bill (H.B. 566) that would create rape and sexual violence awareness programs for all students entering Pennsylvania colleges and universities for the first time.

The current hearing agenda is:

· 9:45 a.m. — Welcome by Gregory Farrington, president, Lehigh University· 9:50 a.m. — Opening remarks by Stetler, Samuelson and McCall· 10 a.m. — John Smeaton, vice provost for student affairs, Lehigh University· 10:15 a.m. — Panel from Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape: Diane Moyer, general counsel, and Jennie Seigler, technical assistance coordinator· 10:40 a.m. — Dr. Peter Garland, vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, State System of Higher Education· 11 a.m. — Dr. Mary Young, vice president of government relations, Pennsylvania Association of Independent Colleges and Universities· 11:20 a.m. — Lori Shorr, special assistant to the secretary of higher education, Pennsylvania Department of Education· 11:40 a.m. – Closing remarks
