Editorial: Courage in the face of fear

The recent events in Las Vegas have left our nation heartbroken and confused once again. Without considering the many arguments for and against gun control in America, an angle to this devastating massacre that affects many Villanova seniors actually lies in the upcoming fall break. It is important to note that many seniors had made plans to travel to this tourist hotspot months ago, and many are now reconsidering their destination. An unfortunate consequence of such tragic events of terror is the haste of people to change plans and penalize the city for the crimes of others. The same consequence proved true in the many acts of terror in Europe over the past years with study abroad programs in targeted cities dwindling in numbers. Many who were once excited about visiting such bustling cities became haunted by the unfortunate nature of these incidents and decided to change their travel plans.

We urge students to stand against this fear. By proceeding with their original plans, we reinforce the image that Las Vegas has always prided itself on: a safe, lively and vibrant city. We should all look to local residents, medical workers, emergency responders and generous citizens who have stood in courage against such an unfortunate act in order to serve those affected. We have the duty to stand behind Las Vegas, starting with the refusal to give into the fear that these acts attempt to instill and the support in visiting cities that rely on tourism. The security and hope of our country should not waver due to the poor and reckless decisions made by one citizen. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this tragedy.
