Wildcats Rally in Fourth Quarter, Defeat Georgetown 48-40

Emma Houghton

Key three-pointers from Raven James and Mary Gedaka jumpstarted an 11-2 run in the fourth quarter that led Villanova past Georgetown, 48-40, on Sunday afternoon.

A jumper from Cassandra Gordon gave the Hoyas a 38-37 lead at the 4:57 mark, capping a 12-0 run since the final 30 seconds of the third quarter. Georgetown held Villanova scoreless for over five minutes at the start of the fourth quarter, before junior James sunk a three, her second of the game. Over a minute later, James secured a rebound on the defensive end and assisted Gedaka for another three-pointer, giving the ‘Cats a 43-38 lead.

The ‘Cats held the Hoyas without a point for nearly five minutes of play, until Nikola Kovacikova made a jumper with six seconds remaining, cutting the lead to 48-40.

Both teams struggled to find the basket, as ‘Nova shot 29.6% from the floor and Georgetown shot 28.3%. The low scoring game can also be attributed to the lack of three-point shots, as both teams shot 20% and 28.6% from beyond the arc. The ‘Cats, however, were effective from the free-throw line, making ten of its 12 attempts.

Despite going 0-8 from three, redshirt Madison Siegrist secured her tenth double-double of the season, recording ten points and 13 rebounds. Last week, she earned her tenth Big East Freshman of the Week Honor, tying the record for the most in conference history.

Gedaka and Bridget Herlihy both finished with 15 points, while James scored six points on two three-pointers. Nikola Kovacikova recorded a team-high 12 points for the Hoyas.

The win brings Villanova’s overall record to 14-11 with an 8-6 record in Big East play. They are currently tied for fifth place in the conference. The loss drops Georgetown’s record to 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

Up next, the Wildcats return home after three straight road games to play Marquette on Feb. 21. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
