Men’s tennis wins, women still struggling

The men’s tennis team earned its second straight victory of the season against tough opponent Bucknell this Saturday at the Villanova Tennis Complex. On the sunny Saturday afternoon, ‘Nova impressively swept the Bucknell Bison in all three doubles matches. As for singles, the Wildcats won the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 spots to complete the match victorious.

In singles, Witty, who moved up to the No. 2 spot successfully, crushed his opponent Cohenca 6-3, 6-2. Shaheen defeated Katten 6-2, 6-1 and Alenik defeated Hascoe 6-3, 6-2. – K.M.

The team has been winless thus far in the season, now with a 0-11 record. The fortunes did not change on Saturday versus the Bucknell Bison, as they lost 6-1.

In doubles play, the only ‘Cats to post a win were Emily Urda and Wesleigh Donadio, as they defeated Dumitrita Iepuras and Daria Tuzhikova 8-4.

Tania Varela and Lauren Lucido defeated Villanova’s Carla Erskine and Allison Solberg 8-3. In the final match, Carlin Calcaterra and Courtney Casey narrowly defeated the ‘Nova pair Kristin Gobberg and Courtney Reed 9-8.

In singles play, the ‘Cats were swept. However, Allison Solberg offered some excitement as she kept it close with Carlin Calcaterra, though she eventually fell.

The other sets were not as exciting as the Bison ran the table against the Wildcats, sweeping them and extending the ‘Cats’ losing season.

‘Nova tried to forget its effort against the Bison the next day at home against the Binghamton Bearcats.

The Bearcats, who were sporting an 8-2 record, came to play, and the ‘Cats were not prepared as they were swept 7-0.  – S.S.
