Whitmore is the final piece in a stellar 2022 recruiting class.

2022 five star forward Cam Whitmore announced his commitment to Jay Wright and the Villanova Wildcats today, announcing his decision live on CBS Sports. Whitmore, ranked the 24th player in the 2022 recruiting class by 247Sports composite rankings, is the third player to join the class of ‘22, and the second in as many weeks, joining Branden Hausen, who committed last week, and Mark Armstrong, who committed in the Spring.

Whitmore said his decision was because of his bond with the Villanova coaches, as well as Villanova’s location close to his family in his hometown of Severn, Maryland. He felt the Villanova program felt like a family, and he felt welcomed when he visited a practice and talked with the team and the coaching staff.

The addition of Whitmore moves the Wildcats 2022 recruiting class to eighth in the country in the 247Sports team rankings.

Whitmore, who stands at 6’6”, has recently gained five star status after a successful summer season on the AAU circuit. The Maryland native is a quintessential Villanova player, and seems to be next in line for what has become “Wing-U” over the last 6 years. Following in the steps of Josh Hart, Saddiq Bey, Phil Booth, Kris Jenkins, and so many more, Whitmore also becomes the next Wildcat out of the “DMV” (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia), and will likely see similar successes.

Roster turnover is never certain in college basketball these days, but come 2022-23, Collin Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels, and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree will definitely no longer be with the team. As a result, the current three man class will slide in nicely to replace the three super seniors.

The transfer portal and NBA draft could always change things, but at this point the 2022-23 roster seems mostly set. Depending on how Eric Dixon and Nnanna Njoku look this season, the addition of a big through the transfer portal may be the only thing the next iteration of the Wildcats need.

As things stand currently, however, Wright is likely finished assembling the Villanova graduating class of 2026, but with the addition of Whitmore, the Wildcats have gained all the pieces they need.
