Former Villanova guard Lucy Olsen announced her commitment to the University of Iowa on Wednesday, April 17.
The announcement was first reported by Talia Goodman at thenexthoops.com. It was later officially confirmed by Olsen herself on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).
Olsen was the third leading scorer in the nation, averaging 23.3 points per game. She also averaged 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
Olsen entered the transfer portal on April 9 after the Wildcats fell short on a WBIT championship run.
A graduate of Spring-Ford Area High School, Olsen played the last three seasons at Villanova. She started in all 105 games of her Villanova career. During her time at Villanova, Olsen was named first-team All-Big East and earned the conference’s Most Improved Player Award.
Olsen had an official visit with Iowa on Tuesday, April 16. Less than 24 hours later, she inked a deal with the former home of Caitlin Clark.
Iowa fell short in a March Madness championship run to South Carolina. The Hawkeyes were 34-5 last season. Olsen was the final scholarship Iowa had available to give out.
The guard is not new to filling in big shoes. Olsen filled the role of Dallas Wings guard Maddy Sigrest after she departed Villanova for the draft last offseason. She now has the same opportunity to replace recent Indiana Fever draftee Clark.
Olsen has one year of eligibility remaining.
Villanova will have a tough time filling the void of Olsen. Olsen is the first of six Wildcats in the transfer portal to find a new home. The future of Villanova women’s basketball is uncertain and unknown.
