Men’s Lacrosse Defeats Colgate in Home Opener, 15–9

Villanova men’s lacrosse opened the season at home with a 15–8 win over Colgate.

On Saturday, Feb 24, Villanova (1-2) dominated Colgate (3-3) in its home opener, winning 15–9. 

Villanova opened up to an early lead, scoring five goals in the first quarter. Senior attack Matt Licata contributed two goals, while junior attack Dan Martin, junior midfielder Tyler Boes and redshirt freshman attack Lucas Newton all put one in the back of the net. 

Colgate ended the first quarter with one goal at the very end of the period. 

The Wildcats headed into the second quarter up 5-1. 

Redshirt freshman attack Colin Michener scored early in the second quarter with an impressive shot to the back of the net, putting the ‘Cats at a 6-1 lead over the Raiders. 

However, Colgate began to get into its rhythm after scoring two goals in a row shortly after, making the score, 6-3.  

Licata and Michener responded with goals to make the score, 8-3, but Colgate scored again less than 30 seconds later, bringing the score to 8-4. 

The Raiders ended the period by putting one in the back of the net with only 6 seconds left, tightening the score, 8-5. 

In the opening of the second half, Graduate attack Thomas McIntire and Martin came out quick with goals, increasing Villanova’s lead to 10-5. 

The Raiders responded with a goal a few minutes later to change the scoreboard.

Graduate defender Stephen Zupicich and graduate midfielder Mason Reale both scored with five minutes left in the 3rd period, increasing Villanova’s lead, 12-6. 

The third quarter ended with a goal from the Raiders.

The Raiders scored another goal to open the fourth quarter, but Michener and Newton each added another goal to their names, increasing the Wildcats’ lead to 14-8. 

Colgate scored again with just five minutes left in the game. Junior attack Luke Raymond finished off the game with a goal to seal the Villanova victory.

Villanova is back in action on Saturday, March 2, when it travels to Bethlehem to face off against Lehigh (1-2) at 11 am.
