An apple a day: Faculty and Staff Appreciation Week
April 3, 2003
Ever think about how hard it is to lecture for an hour straight? To be on your hands and knees, scrubbing floors and cleaning showers? How about dealing with the phone calls of hundreds of angry students who are having problems with registration?
The week of April 7-11, Villanova students will be doing a little more than placing an apple on their favorite teacher’s desk. It holds the second annual Faculty and Staff appreciation week at Villanova. Reagan Kenwell and Jackie Johns of the Student Government Association have organized a five-day “Thank You” for those who keep the University up and running.
A flyer mailed to Villanova students mapped out the schedule for the week. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday there will be a barbeque picnic on Mendel Field.
Students have donated individual meals from their meal plans to supply the food and drinks. The event is open to all students, faculty and staff members. Tuesday is the day to thanks professors and administrators.
On Wednesday appreciation will be shown to dining services and janitors. Thursday, the Department of Public Safety, staff members, mailroom workers and grounds crew will be honored.
Throughout the week, gifts will be given out. For instance, faculty members will be given coffee mugs, dining services workers will receive pens and staff members will be given chocolate.
In the middle of March, students were invited to vote online for the annual “Teacher of the Year” award.
Awards will be given out to the winner from each of the four colleges — Commerce and Finance, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Nursing and Engineering, as well as an overall winner among the administration. This year, however, Kenwell explains that “Six awards will be given out. There was a tie for first place in the College of Engineering.”
Both University President Rev. Edmund J. Dobbin, O.S.A., as well as Vice President Dr. Helen K. Lafferty will speak at an awards ceremony in the Connelly Center President’s Lounge from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
