A local princess

Sara Angle

More commonly known as Princess Grace or The Princess of Monaco, Patricia Grace Kelly was born in Philadelphia on Nov. 12, 1929. Tomorrow would have been the princess’s 81st birthday. Kelly’s glamorous life began in the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia. Her mother, Margaret Majer, was the first-ever female physical education teacher at the University of Pennsylvania, and her father, Jack Kelly, was a three-time Olympic gold medal-winning rower. While the Kellys were wealthy, their Irish-Catholic heritage led them to reject living on the Protestant-dominated Main Line, so they staked their claim at 3901 Henry Ave. and spent their summers vacationing at the south Jersey shore.
