The Last Lecture: Dr. Suzanne C. Toton

Luisa Nitzschke

Think of your favorite professor.  Imagine sitting in their last lecture.  What would they say?  What valuable advice cold they give you about life, college, and failing?

What is one thing you would want to convey most?

Struggling to end needless human suffering is a worthy life goal.

What is the best academic advice you’d have for your students?

Become proficient in another language, study in the Global South, take advantage of service and immersion experiences, and never stop questioning.

What is your stance on failing to achieve a desired outcome?

When one door closes, another seems to always open.  And from my experience it’s been much more meaningful and fulfilling than the one I set my heart on.

What is your favorite inspirational quote?

“And what does the Lord require of you?  To act justly and love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
