November 18, 2017
It was quite the night for Villanova Basketball as both the men’s and women’s teams faced off at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. The women’s team faced Lehigh in a contest that tipped off at 5 p.m., while the men’s team played Lafayette three hours after the finish of the first game.
The women defeated Lehigh by a score of 62-42 in a dominant performance from the start. The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period and didn’t slow down from there. They led 30-16 at the half en route to their third victory of the year. Mary Gedaka and Adrianna Hahn led the team in scoring with 13 points each. Gedaka was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and tallied six boards as well to her impressive stat sheet. This was quite a performance from the sophomore, has developed immensely in such a short period of time. Although Hahn struggled with her shot (4/14), she contributed seven rebounds and three assists, and is always an integral part of the ‘Cats success. The Wildcats are a perfect 3-0 to start the season and look forward to adding to this success as they face No. 11 Duke on Sunday, at Jake Nevin. Facing a top ranked team early in the season will be a big test for Villanova.
Fresh off the momentum of the first game, the men’s team was ready to bring home the second win of the night for the Wildcats. They came out hot in what turned out to be a route of Lafayette. The Wildcats led 56-23 at half, with the final score being 104-57 in their favor. This is the second game in a row in which the ‘Cats have scored over 100 points, and they’re off to a perfect 3-0 start. Mikal Bridges yet again led the team in scoring with 24 points, which included a spectacular 9-for-10 from the field and 6-for-6 from three-point. Jalen Brunson tacked on 22 while shooting 9-for-11 from the field and adding six assists. Redshirt freshman Omari Spellman had another strong showing with 15 points and nine rebounds. Through three games, Spellman has shown that he was definitely worth the hype. The Wildcats shot a spectacular 62.3 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from the three-point line. It was an utterly dominant performance and each player on the time registered minutes in the game. Villanova has a few days to rest before the Battle for Atlantis tournament opens up on Wednesday, November 22. In this contest, the ‘Cats face off against Western Kentucky and look forward to adding to their win column.
It was a dominant performance for the Villanova Basketball program on Friday, something that Nova Nation has become accustomed to. Both teams are off to a stellar 3-0 start and have shown no signs of slowing down.
