Field Hockey Grabs Big East Opener

Madison Fairhurst

On Saturday, the field hockey team hosted the Georgetown Hoyas at the Proving Grounds for their first Big East game of the season. Going into the contest, the Hoyas  maintained a five-game win streak and were undefeated on the year (5-0). The Wildcats held a record of 2-3 on the season after a tough weekend away. However, they had dominated teams such as Indiana and Lehigh earlier in the year.

Georgetown controlled the first few minutes of the game until the Wildcats scored two consecutive goals. The first of which was scored by Sophomore Emily Clarke and assisted by Anna Sherwood. This goal sparked the Wildcats intensity which led to Junior Megan Vermeil’s goal with three minutes left in the half. The ‘Cats would take this 2-1 lead to the intermission.

Both teams came out ready to play in the second half, but it was clear the Wildcats were set on grabbing the win. With 27 minutes left, Junior Lydia Sydnor scored to put the team above the Hoyas by two. Ten minutes later, junior Christen Pennington added to the lead with two goals of her own,  making the score 5-1. The team continued to play tough defense as Georgetown was unable to score for the remainder of the game giving ‘Nova the victory.
