Fueled by Jekot, ‘Cats Get Second Win of Season

A little more than a week after the home opener in the newly renovated Pavilion, the women’s basketball team took their talents an hour up north to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to square off with the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks. The Wildcats came into a road environment and got a win 70-48. After only having a 32-18 lead going into halftime, the Wildcats turned up the heat offensively and defensively to score 19 points each in the third and fourth periods.

For the Mountain Hawks, junior guard Camryn Buhr led her team with 13 points, and Mary Clougherty contributed 11 points off the bench. On the contrary, the Wildcats’ top two performers were junior guard Kelly Jekot and junior forward Mary Gedaka. Jekot dropped 24 points and pulled in six rebounds while Gedaka put in 15 points and corralled five boards. On the defensive end for the Cats, guard Adrianna Hahn was a menace. The senior from Wilmington, Delaware had six steals which helped to lead to 16 points off of turnovers for the Cats.

This was another impressive showing for head coach Henry Perretta’s Wildcats squad. Similar to last week’s win over Hartford, the Cats won the rebounding battle 41-39. In addition, all the Cats were dropping dimes to each other as the team finished with 20 assists for the game. When the ball is hopping around the court, it is difficult for any opposing team to keep up with the ball movement of Villanova. Another plus was that on the defensive end, the Wildcats forced a whopping 19 turnovers on Lehigh. This high number helped to lead to easy transition points as well as points off of turnovers altogether.

The Wildcats will be back in action in a Big 5 matchup with the La Salle University Explorers this upcoming Tuesday, Nov. 20thin the Finneran Pavilion at 7 PM.
