Last weekend, Villanova’s women’s basketball team was looking to bounce back from losses to DePaul and Marquette. ‘Nova had to wait six days to get back on the court at the Finneran Pavilion to play against Georgetown and made the most of the opportunity on Alumni Day by walloping the Hoyas, 91-43. 

After a layup from junior Mary Gedaka to open up the scoring, Georgetown responded with a three-point shot from Morgan Smith in order to take an early 3-2 lead within the first minute of action. From that point on, Villanova was able to take control in the first period by going on a 14-5 run with triples from seniors Adrianna Hahn and Jannah Tucker and a couple of shots from Gedaka and fellow junior Kelly Jekot. This spurt gave ‘Nova a lead it would never lose for the rest of the game. Villanova ended the first period with a 21-10 lead.

The second period was much of the same for the ‘Cats, as it used another quick 12-2 run to their advantage to extend the lead to 21 halfway through the second period. From that point on, the Hoyas only scored four points for the rest of the period and faced a halftime deficit of 38-16. 

The key to the hot start for head coach Harry Perretta and his Villanova squad was not only their stifling defense, but also their efficiency from the field in the half. Villanova shot a total of 64 percent from the field in the first half and held G’Town to 24 percent.

The third period was the game changer that led to the blowout. Villanova was unconscious from all over the court, hitting all but one of their 18 field goal attempts at the start of the second half to lead to a 94.4 field goal percentage for the period. Jekot dropped in 16 on seven for seven shooting and two long balls, and her classmate Gedaka contributed 11 and also shot perfect from the field with five for five shooting. Villanova outscored Georgetown 37-14 in the first 10 minutes of the second half for a 77-30 lead going into the fourth period.

The fourth period was the only one in which G’Town scored more than ‘Nova — as the Hoyas outscored the ‘Cats 13-12, but the damage had already been done. For the icing on the cake for Villanova, sophomore walk-on Grace Lange dropped in a triple of her own with 12 seconds left to put an exclamation mark on Alumni Day.

It was the usual suspects for Villanova that contributed for most of the scoring as Jekot led the way with 22 points, Gedaka had 21, Tucker dropped 14, and Hahn put up 11 of her own. These four alone outscored Georgetown 66-44 and combined for 29-36 from the field for an 80.5 field goal percentage.

‘Nova moves to 16-9 overall on the season with a 7-7 record in Big East play and will play their last two games in the Pavilion this Friday and Sunday against St. John’s and Seton Hall.
