In Honor of Karl Lagerfeld’s Passing, Revisiting Early 2000’s Fashion

Early in the morning of Feb. 19th, fashion mogul, Karl Lagerfeld passed away.  In honor of the fashion giant, this week, the Villanovan will analyze some fashion trends of recent memory.  The fashion trends have changed drastically between Y2K and now.  It was easy to make the mistake of wearing one strap of your backpack, even though wearing both was in again.  Although, these trends are easy to dismiss as a case of collective poor judgement, in most circumstances they pave the way for the future.

Take for example the early 2000’s, hip-hop culture waded into the general population and brought baggy clothes.  Dressing up was wearing a size-too-large pair of basketball shorts and a football jersey.  The more ostentatious the jewelry, the better.  The baggy clothes could’ve served as a makeshift parachute in a pinch.  Almost all short term fashion trends seem rather unfortunate with the addition of time.  However preposterous the extra large attire trend was, its impact is undoubtedly felt today.  Shoes from the era spurred the modern sneaker culture and began the era of basketball players having their own unique shoes and branding.  The baggy clothes and bulky shoes were the pill we as a society had to swallow to enable the variety and beauty of today’s sneakers.

Just as CD’s turned into MP3s, Kobe 2s turned into Lebron 14s.  As easy as it is to dismiss current trends as sheep following celebrities’ vanity plays, suffering through the seemingly insufferable is what pushes us forward.  While today, it is easy to make fun of people who put hideous bricks of footwear on their feet in the name of high fasion (Balenciagas), those bricks of composite material will lead to innovation.  Next time you’re walking down the street wishing to cut off the bobbing man bun in front of you, consider the revolution he is starting.
