Field Hockey’s Heart Broken Versus Rider

On Sunday, the Rider Broncs came into town to face the field hockey team at the Proving Grounds in Conshohocken. Villanova was 2-3 heading into the game coming off a tough loss against Georgetown in Washington, DC. Despite getting outshot 38-7, Rider mounted a late comeback to secure the 4-3 win and break Villanova’s two-game winning streak against them on Sunday.
Rider started out well, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play. It added to its lead in the 27th minute, making the score 2-0. However, the Wildcats came back strong thanks to Katie Capalbo, who scored her first goal of the season a minute later. The score remained 2-1 at half time.
Villanova created many great opportunities in the third quarter but was unable to capitalize. Senior Christen Pennington knotted the game up in the 52nd minute off a penalty corner. Lydia Signor added another goal in the final minute of regulation which gave Villanova a one score lead. Rider tied the game up with an untimed goal to send the game to overtime.
After eight minutes of golden goal overtime, Rider’s Carly Brosious scored the game winning goal. Villanova drops to 3-3 on the year while Rider jumps to 4-2.
Villanova heads to Liberty on Friday for the first game of a two-game road trip.
