‘Nova knocks off Xavier
October 4, 2019
Earlier today, Villanova hosted Xavier in a Big East Conference matchup. The Wildcats were looking for their first conference win after a 1-0 loss on the road to Creighton. The Musketeers came into the Higgins Soccer Complex on a two-game losing streak, looking for their fifth win of the season. ‘Nova finished the game with a 1-0 victory, improving to 6-3-1 and 1-1-1 in the conference.
The first half ended with both teams still scoreless. The Wildcats’ best chance came in the 8th minute when a shot by sophomore forward Seidu Shamsudeen would hit the post. ‘Nova stayed aggressive, however, outshooting the Musketeers 7-3 going into the half.
The decisive goal came late in the 79th minute on a shot from junior Theo Quartley. The play started from a pass from senior Sean Texeira where Quartley shot from the left side. The ball trickled in past the goalkeeper, giving ‘Nova the lead and Quartley his first goal of the season. It was also one of the Wildcats’ five shots on target. By the end of the game, the ‘Cats outshot Xavier 15-10.
Villanova finished with another clean sheet in the Higgins Soccer Complex. They have yet to allow a goal at home this season thanks to junior goalkeeper Carson Williams. With five saves for the match, four coming in the second half, Williams prevented any attempt for the Musketeers to tie the game. The Wildcats are now 5-0 at home and prove again to be difficult to beat on their home turf.
‘Nova’s next game will be at home in the Higgins Soccer Complex on Tuesday. They will be facing the James Madison Dukes who are on fire with an eight game winning streak. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
