Villanova’s two game winning streak came to an end on Friday after the Wildcats fell to Butler, 58-41, at home. Villanova is now 8-7 overall and 3-2 within the conference. 

The Wildcats’ strongest performance was in the first quarter, where they shot 45.45% from the field (5-11) and 50% from three (2-4). Villanova held its largest lead of the game (four points) with 8:13 remaining in the quarter and managed to hold a 14-12 lead going into the second quarter. 

The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run to give themselves a 25-14 lead. Here, the Wildcats struggled to respond offensively making only one of their 15 shots, eight of which were from beyond the arc. 

While Butler held its largest lead of the game (21 points) with only 3:39 left in the third quarter, the Wildcats would not quit. Triples from Sam Carangi, Bridget Herlihy and Brooke Mullin helped build a 12-4 run to bring Villanova back within 13 at the end of the quarter. This continued into fourth quarter where the Wildcats were able to cut the lead to just 10 points, but despite three consecutive defensive stops, were not able to bring the gap to single digits. 

Overall, the Wildcats shot 22.4% from the field (13-58) and 25.8% (8-31) from three on the day. They were outrebounded by the Butler 50-35. 

Maddy Siegrist notched yet another double-double, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds. Her six double-doubles, the last three recorded in consecutive games, lead the Big East. Carangi scored a career-high nine points from a career best three, three-point baskets. 

Villanova is back in action Sunday, Jan. 12 when they take on the Xavier Musketeers at home in the Finneran Pavilion. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
