Seventeen Villanova Students Awarded U.S. Fulbright Student Grants
May 10, 2020
17 University students and alumni have been named U.S. Fulbright scholars, winning the prestigious award from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Awarded by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, this program offers grants to conduct research, study and teach abroad.
Every year since 1994, at least one student from the University has been selected for the award. The University has also been listed among the nation’s top producers of Fulbright Scholars for more than a decade. In addition to the 17 recipients, eight other Villanovans were selected as alternates, and 21 Villanovans were recognized as semi-finalists.
“These amazing Villanovans have dedicated themselves to becoming globally-connected leaders, joining the lengthy list of alumni who are using their gifts to serve others,” Director of the Center for Research and Fellowships (CRF) Michael T. Westrate, Ph.D., said.
The CRF administers the Fulbright competition and provides applicants with one-on-one consultations and group support throughout the application process.
“The Fulbright Student Program gives Villanova students and alumni the opportunity to bring our Augustinian Catholic values to life by using the knowledge, experiences and skills gained at the University to ignite change around the world,” University Provost Patrick G. Maggitti, Ph.D said. “Through study, research, teaching and engagement with communities across the globe, these remarkable individuals use their talents to make a positive impact on society.”
The Fulbright Program allows recipients to meet, work with and learn from the people of the host country. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction in the classroom, field, home and in daily tasks. These experiences allow the recipients to gain an appreciation of others’ viewpoints and beliefs.
