After weeks of deliberation, the Big East has finally released a statement canceling all fall sports during the 2020 season. This decision would affect field hockey, men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer.

Additionally, the Big East noted that, “the conference will assess alternative options to stage fall sports contests during the spring of 2021.” The NCAA has not released any new information as of August 5th, when it placed a deadline on all conferences to make their decision on August 21st.

Earlier this week, other conferences, such as the Big Ten and the Pac-12, announced their postponements of fall sports competitions and, most notably, their football seasons. They hope to resume practice and competitions as early as January and run fall sports during the spring season. However, not all conferences are taking these actions, and it is ultimately up to each individual conference to decide its own fate about whether or not to continue with fall competitions.

This announcement does not affect the basketball season, which could take place during the 2021 calendar year. Athletes and coaches continue to stay alert for new information from both the NCAA as well as respective conferences regarding how and if sports competitions will take place in the spring of 2021.
