The Villanovan has confirmed that Admiral Samuel Paparo, Villanova Alumnus and Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, will deliver the 2025 Commencement address to Villanova University’s graduating class on May 16 at 2:30 p.m. in Villanova Stadium.
University President Rev. Peter M. Donahue, O.S.A., Ph.D. revealed this during an exclusive interview with The Villanovan on Friday, April 25. Honoring tradition, The Villanovan is privileged to be the first to break this news to the community.
Admiral Paparo, a graduate of Villanova’s Class of 1987, has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Navy, rising to become the Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, overseeing one of the most strategically important regions in the world. His achievements and Villanova roots make him an inspirational speaker for the Class of 2025.
“He graduated from here, and he decided to go into the Navy,” Fr. Peter said. “He has had a great career. I think for the [Class of 2025], you know, somebody who really has taken his Villanova degree and used it to really propel himself forward.”
Admiral Paparo’s personal connection to Villanova runs deep. A graduate of Villanova, this time the Admiral will receive an honorary degree, alongside his daughter, who will be graduating with the Class of 2025.
Fr. Peter spoke highly of the Admiral’s character and the values he embodies, which align closely with those of the University.
“He’s a man that believes in truth,” Fr. Peter said. “He’s a man that works very hard in terms of his career to create community, to join people together in peace. And we want to be, he’s very committed to making world peace and keeping people safe and I think that’s a value that all of us cherish here.”
The selection of Admiral Paparo as the Commencement speaker came about in a unique way.
Fr. Peter recalled a casual conversation with the Admiral last fall, saying, “I said to him, ‘So your daughter is graduating this year?’ And he says, ‘Yeah, I’ll be back for graduation.’ He said, ‘If you need a speaker, let me know.’ I said, ‘Well, ironically, I do.’”
This unexpected yet fitting exchange led to the Admiral’s selection as the speaker for the Class of 2025.
From a Villanova graduate to one of the military’s most esteemed leaders, Admiral Paparo’s journey exemplifies the dedication and values instilled by his alma mater. His address will serve as a reminder to graduates about the power of hard work and service to others.
