Villanova women’s lacrosse kicked off Big East play with its first win against the University of Connecticut for the first time since 2021.
Villanova (7-3, 1-0 Big East) defeated the University of Connecticut (6-4, 0-1 Big East), 11-7, at Villanova Stadium on Saturday, March 22. The Wildcats are now on a four-game win streak.
Entering the game, UConn led the all-time series against Villanova, 2-13.
Redshirt sophomore attacker Elena Torres highlighted the Wildcats’ offensive performance.
After tying a season-high of goals, Torres now has 19 goals on the season, which only trails senior attacker Sydney Pappas. Nine of Torres’ 14 shots were on goal which set a season-high.
Villanova and UConn kept a close game through the first quarter. Torres was the first to score a goal for either team. It was the start of Villanova’s 38 shot attempts, one attempt shy of a season-high. Pappas also found the back of the net to close the first quarter tied with UConn, 3-3.
The Wildcats were able to net four goals in the second quarter while holding UConn to nothing. Senior goalkeeper Cate Gallagher had a season-high 12 saves protecting the net. She played the entire 60 minutes in back-to-back games as goalkeeper.
Torres netted three of Villanova’s four goals in the second quarter. Her first goal, which came two minutes into the quarter, gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game. With a 4-0 second quarter, Villanova led UConn, 7-3.
Villanova outshot UConn, 38-23, with a big chunk of the shots coming in the second quarter.
UConn was unable to recover from that quarter and could not regain a lead for the remainder of the game.
Alongside Torres, sophomore Sophia Corretjer tacked on a season-high three goals.
The Wildcats’ four-game win streak is the longest since the start of the 2023 season. With Big East play now underway, Villanova now prepares to host Butler next Saturday, March 29 (1 p.m., FloSports). Butler has not won a game this season.
