Coming off a 10-7 loss to Lehigh on Saturday, Villanova men’s lacrosse (1-3) snapped its two-game losing streak with a 9-6 win over Drexel at Villanova Stadium on March 2.
The Wildcats took 38 total shots, with 19 shots on goal. Villanova redshirt goalkeeper Anthony Wilson recorded 11 saves in the win.
The game began as a low-scoring contest. The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead late in the first quarter courtesy of sophomore midfielder Nicholas Lucchesi.
The second quarter saw more action, with Drexel jumping to a 4-2 lead. Redshirt sophomore Colin Michener scored a goal to trim the lead to 4-3 with 6:19 left in the quarter.
Michener’s goal was crucial, giving the Wildcats momentum that paid off with a second goal from Lucchesi just 1.5 seconds before the break.
Coming out of halftime, the score was tied at 4-4. Back-to-back goals from graduate attacker Matt Licata quickly gave the Wildcats a 6-4 lead after just three minutes of play.
The Wildcats maintained the lead for the entire third quarter and entered the fourth quarter with a 8-6 lead.
Villanova continued to take control in the fourth quarter. With 11:49 to play, it took a 9-6 lead and held the Dragons to zero goals in the final quarter.
Up next is a Saturday afternoon matchup with the University of Pennsylvania. The Quakers have faced three nationally ranked opponents in their first four games and lost all three. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
