On Wednesday night, sophomore guard Maddie Webber dropped a career-high 30 points to lead Villanova to a 65-62 win over DePaul at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL.
Villanova (14-11, 8-5 Big East) is back in the win column after losing to No. 24 Creighton, 70-57, on Saturday, Feb. 8. With less than three weeks remaining of conference play, the Wildcats are tied for fifth in Big East rankings. DePaul is now 12-15 overall and 7-7 in the Big East.
Webber scored 14 of Villanova’s 22 first quarter points. Before tonight, Webber’s previous career-high was 23 points in a 70-61 loss to Princeton on Nov. 13. She has now scored double digits in eight of her last 10 games, averaging 15.6 points over that span. She tied a season-high in three-pointers, hitting five of her 11 three-point attempts.
Freshman guard Jasmine Bascoe collected 10 points and grabbed five boards. This was Bascoe’s seventh consecutive game with double digits as she is now averaging 17.5 points over the last seven games. Senior guard Kaitlyn Orihel and graduate guard Lara Edmanson also chipped in with eight and six points respectively.
On the defensive end, junior forward Denae Carter led Villanova’s efforts, finishing with three blocks and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Webber sank two three pointers in the first 1:15 of the game to start a dominant night on the floor.
Players on both sides of the court fell into foul trouble. Two DePaul players, along with Carter, reached four personal fouls. Orihel and Bascoe also picked up three fouls by the fourth quarter.
DePaul slightly outshot Villanova, going 40.7% from the field and 28.6% from three. The Wildcats shot 38.5% from the field and 30.8% from the long range, while going 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Blue Demons failed to capitalize on some free throw opportunities, going 10-for-17 from the foul line.
DePaul graduate forward Jorie Allen put up a team-leading 23 points against the ‘Cats while also dishing out three assists and grabbing five rebounds.
A three pointer by Freshman guard Dani Ceseretti gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the night. With 3:08 left in the game, Villanova was up by nine points putting them in a stable position to pull off the win against the Blue Demons.
The Wildcats now look forward to a road game against Xavier (6-19, 1-13 Big East) on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Cintas Center (2 p.m., FloSports).
