Wi-Fi is an essential resource for any college student. Whether or not you are browsing the web, looking up resources online, or watching TV in your dorm, Wi-Fi is necessary. Being an on-campus resident, Wi-Fi is essential for using my computer for class, homework, and watching TV. If Wi-Fi speeds aren’t quick enough, students’ performance can be hindered. Students around campus believe that high speed network that is easy to connect to is necessary.
When installing a TV for my dorm after fall break, I realized that it would not connect to the VU Mobile network, which I found strange. After visiting TechZone in the Commons, an on-campus resource center for any tech-related issues, I was told that I must register my TV under the VU Play network before being able to connect it to Villanova’s Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi speeds on campus need attention
Across campus there are many ways to connect to Wi-Fi. If you are using a laptop or phone, you must connect to the Wi-Fi network named VU Mobile which gives you access to high-speed connection anywhere around campus. This applies to residence halls as well. The same network that students connect to in the library or dining hall transfers over to their residence halls which helps with making the process of using Wi-Fi on campus seamless without the confusion of switching networks depending on where you are on campus.
Although the VU Mobile network proves itself to be easily accessible, the VU Play network isn’t as widely advertised. Many students including I did not know that if you are installing a TV to your dorm or suite on-campus, you cannot use the VU Mobile Wi-Fi network. This can cause confusion among students as the VU Mobile network which is function across any device except for TV systems and monitors.
In addition, on Villanova’s website, the information section about the VU Play network has been removed and is unable to be viewed. If a student is confused about connecting their new device to on-campus Wi-Fi and cannot find information on it as well, there is an issue. Although this can cause trouble for students, it is not a huge issue and can be resolved easily.
Although the need for high-speed Wi-Fi on campus can cause frustration amongst college students, it is important to remember the resources on-campus that can help you resolve them. As mentioned earlier, TechZone is a readily available resource for students struggling with any tech related issues. There are two TechZone locations on campus. One can be found on the first floor of Falvey Library and the second in Dobbin Hall in the Commons. TechZone is also open all seven days of the week allowing them to be easily accessible at all times.
Overall, Wi-Fi speeds need to be addressed, but at the same time there are plenty of resources on-campus that can work to help us achieve that goal. With the world of digital information, assignments, and entertainment constantly expanding, we should be confident that Villanova will evolve alongside it.
