This past week, Villanova’s men’s tennis team went 2-1 at home, defeating St. Joe’s, 4-3, and Lafayette, 7-0, on senior day, but falling to Georgetown, 5-2.

The match against St. Joseph’s started off shaky, with Josh Robinson and Cooper Gordon losing their doubles match, 3-6. Trey Fourticq and Tighe Brunetti took the only doubles win of the day, winning, 6-2, while Justin Suarez and Ryan Nguyen lost their match, 3-6.

However, singles proved to be more successful for the ‘Cats against St. Joe’s. Robinson lost his match in two, both 1-6, but Brunetti won his match in two, 6-3 and 7-6-[5].

Gordon, the third seed, lost his match in two sets, 0-6 and 1-6, while Nguyen won his match in two, 6-1 and 7-6-[5], and Suarez won in three, 2-6, 6-2 and 6-2.

To finish the match off, Fourticq won his singles against Serra, 6-3, 3-6 and 7-6-[11].

“Fourticq played a really tough match,” head coach Brad Adams said. “He overcame a lot of adversity and I am really proud of him for this win.”

Robinson and Gordon lost their doubles match, 2-6, but Fourticq and Brunetti’s 7-6-[6] and Suarez and Nguyen’s 6-4 wins ensured that Villanova won the doubles point.

However, singles is where the ‘Cats struggled against the Hoyas. Robinson lost his match in two, 5-7 and 2-6. Gordon lost his match in two, both 0-6. Suarez lost in two, 2-6 and 3-6. Nguyen lost in a three, 6-2, 2-6 and 6-7-[3], and Fourticq also lost in a close match, 6-7-[5] and 1-6.

But, things started to look up when Brunetti took the court, winning his match, 6-4 and 6-3.

“Doubles and Brunetti’s single match really elevated the team in the battle against Georgetown,” Adams said.

To finish off the regular season, the ‘Cats took on Lafayette, and celebrated senior day and a 7-0 win.

Robinson and Gordon won, 6-4, in doubles, and Fourticq and Brunetti won, 7-5. Suarez and Will Gatti, the two seniors who were recognized on senior day, did not get to finish their doubles match.

As for singles, it was a clean sweep for the ‘Cats, with Robinson winning, 6-4 and 6-3, Brunetti winning, 6-1 and 6-4, Eitan Khromchenko winning, 6-2 and 6-0, and Nguyen winning his match,  8-4.

The two Villanova seniors also dominated in their matches, as Suarez won, 8-2, and Gatti won, 8-3.

“It was Gatti’s first singles match of the season,” Adams said. “And I’m really glad and proud we were able to leave with a win.”

The Wildcats are now getting ready to head down to Cayce, South Carolina this upcoming weekend to tackle the Big East tournament.

“It is going to be really hot down there this weekend, and we need to make sure we take care of ourselves and our bodies,” Adams said. “The boys are really excited for this opportunity and to go down, play, and end this season on a high note.”
