The ‘Cats received good news, as forward Trey Patterson announced he will enroll for the spring semester. 

Patterson, the No. 31 recruit in the country according to 247Sports Composite rankings, is from Somerset, New Jersey, and attended Rutgers Preparatory School in the state. 

Patterson released the announcement on social media, along with a statement. 

“For the last seven years, Rutgers Prep has been my home and I can’t thank everyone enough for always supporting me to the fullest extent, but it’s time to begin the next chapter of my life,” Patterson wrote. “I am fortunate to have completed all of my high school requirements, so I will be leaving early to start preparing for my college journey at Villanova University. With the support of my parents and coaches, I will be enrolling at Villanova for the spring semester to start my athletic and academic career.” 

It’s unlikely that Patterson will receive major playing time, but he will be able to practice with the team and will be eligible to play if head coach Jay Wright decides he is needed. Even if he doesn’t play, the head start in practicing with the team and in being able to work with strength and conditioning coach John Shackleton will give Patterson a huge advantage next season. 

Additionally, the NCAA has determined this season to be a “free” year for eligibility purposes, so this will not affect Patterson’s status in the future and he will not need to use a redshirt. 

Injuries can always affect a team’s season, but with the combination of COVID-19 and normal wear and tear, the added depth could be a huge boost. 

Patterson is a 6’7” forward, who has a solid all around game. Even if he doesn’t directly impact games this season, this places him in a terrific position to have a strong season in 2021-22.  

The basketball team has been on a COVID related pause and have not played since Dec. 23, but they are scheduled to return Tuesday, Jan. 19 at home against Seton Hall.
