TSUNAMI RELIEF – DINING FOR THE CHILDREN

Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. January 20, 2005. On Tuesday, February 1, 2005, the Shangri-La Inn in Bala Cynwyd will be hosting a fundraising event and donating their entire profits for all meals served on that day to UNICEF. The international relief organization has appealed for donations to support the urgent humanitarian aid for the estimated 1.5 million affected children in South Asia, many of whom have been orphaned or separated from their families and are in critical need of basic care and support.

“Everyone has to eat that day, both here and in Asia. This is a small way in which we can contribute to the relief effort, and perhaps challenge other restaurants and businesses, to find creative ways to contribute to that effort as well,” said restaurant owner Wen Chau. “We encourage everyone to come out and eat on February 1st to help all of those children who so desperately need this assistance.”

The Shangri-La Inn offers a sushi bar and full sushi and sashimi menu, Hibachi Teppanyaki (tableside cooking) and traditional Chinese cuisine. All meals that day will be prix fixe ($20 lunch and $50 dinner), and patrons participating in the event can choose soup and/or an appetizer, one entrée, and a beverage (soft drinks, wine, sake) from the full lunch menu (for lunch) or dinner menu (for dinner). There will be a drawing at the end of the night for prizes, including a $200 gift certificate to the Shangri-La Inn as first prize, and various other prizes and certificates donated by Starbucks, Manny’s Crabcakes and other participating Bala Cynwyd merchants. Patrons who attend the event and leave their names and contact information will automatically be entered in the contest, and need not attend the actual drawing. Chau expects to be able to raise at least $5,000 for the night, and noted that he would be delighted if there was a much bigger turnout and a much bigger contribution as a result.
